Matt Roberts, the former 3 Doors Down guitarist who performed with the band during most of their success, died overnight in Wisconsin of an apparent overdose. He was 38 years old.

According to Roberts’ father, Darrell — he and his son were in Wisconsin for a charity event where his son was scheduled to perform. The pair went their separate ways after a rehearsal that lasted until 1 AM last night. Matt stayed in an adjoining room, next to his father.

Darrel got the heartbreaking news directly from detectives, who woke him up to tell them that his son had been found dead.

Matt Roberts left 3 Doors Down in 2012 due to a health related issue. He is credited with writing most of the band’s hit songs including ‘Kryptonite’ and ‘Here Without You’.

This marks the latest tragic event to surround the band. In 2012, Todd Harrell, the band’s bassist, was traveling 101 miles per hour and driving high on drugs and alcohol. He killed a 47 year old man in an impairment related accident and was sentenced to two years in prison late last year.
